Excavation has been going on for hundreds of years.  To properly define it, it is the practice of forming a cavity or hole in a specific area that is being worked in.  To form a hollowing out of an area by digging out and removing the soil or debris.  If you apply excavation to the demolition category, the correct application and relative use of the word excavation would apply to the resulting debris left by the razed building and the excavation, or removal, of such debris. Then the digging out and removal of the foundation leaving a hollowed area, usually for rebuilding can be defined as excavation and/or demolition.
